Originator:

Raised by Mr G. Platt of Auckland, from seed collected off Phormium ‘Black Knight’. Named by Mr B. Hagar.

Leaf colour

Colour group:

Brown

Upper surface:

Very dark purplish-brown, almost black. (200A) Feint pale margins.
1cm section

Lower surface:

Generally much greyer in colour (202A) but still very dark.
1cm section

Comments:

This is one of the darkest of the Phormium cultivars. Very similar to ‘Dark Delight’.

Flowers and fruit

Flowers:

Pale brown with a black stalk, produced early in the year. Fruits bright yellow at first and typical P. cookianum shape.

Published descriptions

HEE

This plant has spreading leaves and forms a clump 1-1.2 m high. The leaves are brown (200A) and have a fine bloom on the under surface.

BUR

Rich deep chocolate coloured leaves and compact habit.
